Born and raised in Taipei, DJ/Producer Sonia Calico has been at the forefront of Taiwan’s dance music scene, striving to create music that's undefinable, never constrained by any genres and it shows in her works. She's back with her brand new single "Hougong Crash", blending Chinese imperial harem aesthetic with voguing rhythm into an unprecedented sound.
"Hougong"(後宮)is the imperial harem of ancient China, where all the concubines are fighting against each other, they have split into different camps, competing for power and influence by having the ear of the Emperor. These settings have also provided the basis for popular TV soap operas in Taiwan and China.
Inspired by Taipei's queer art scene, to relate ballroom culture to "Hougong" culture. Both with a dramatic/ competitive nature with a glamorous look, yet with a very feminine and sensitive core, they give as well as receive a lot of sarcasm and dark humour.
Blending the two ideas into the concept. From the track you can hear lots of classic ballroom rhythm and samples with the twist of oriental instrumentation.
